Lesson Four: The Golden Rule
Devotion #6: Word and Deed
Rich Sawicki
“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 7:12
Are you familiar with the Golden Rule? It is more about helping other people than it is about discovering hidden wealth. Jesus kept it simple, basically saying, “If you want kindness, give kindness.” Treat others the way you would like to be treated.
To better understand a situation, try imagining it from another person’s perspective and asking yourself what you would want to happen. That is what the Golden Rule is all about. It is about understanding, putting yourself in the shoes of others, and showing kindness. In the midst of our hectic lives, we often fail to pause and consider the impact of our actions on others around us. This rule, however, summarizes all that the Bible says, according to Jesus. “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39) is like a CliffsNotes note on the subject.
When it comes to the little things in life, as well as the large ones, always remember to follow the Golden Rule. It is simply being there for someone, whether it is by holding a door open, listening to a friend, or simply smiling at someone. It may make a big difference in their day.
Our words and thoughts are equally as important as our actions. Imagine a world where everyone interacted with you in the manner they would like to be addressed. Surely it would be very helpful, right? Let us watch how we talk and choose encouraging and helpful remarks instead of hurtful ones. The way Jesus spent His life taught us how to apply the Golden Rule. He showed kindness to all people, regardless of who they were or where they came from. He showed love to everyone, welcoming the outcasts and healing those who were sick.
Let us consider ways to live by the Golden Rule today. We could forgive those who have wronged us, be nice to strangers, or provide a hand to the lonely. Let us shine our lights one act of kindness at a time. Even the smallest acts of kindness have the power to point others to Jesus. It is where they can find freedom and redemption through His sacrifice, the ultimate act of kindness.
Prayer:
Jesus, thank You for the simple yet powerful message of the Golden Rule. Please help us to put it into practice every day by being loving, respectful, and kind to everyone we meet. Make us aware of the struggles of our fellow humans and grant us the strength and courage to respond compassionately to their needs. May our words and actions reflect Your love, bringing glory to Your name. Amen.
