Lesson One • Darkness

Devotion #1: God is Present in our Darkest Hours

Josh Thayer

I want to talk about a miracle that happened during the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. From the sixth hour until the ninth hour, there was darkness over the whole land, and the sun’s light failed. It was not just a regular eclipse or anything like that. We are talking pitch-black darkness. It is like you are in your closet with the door shut. It was a miracle from God that testified to the divine nature of Jesus Christ.

Matthew 27:45 says, “Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.” Mark 15:33 reiterates, “And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.”

The darkness was a sign of God’s power and His love for humanity. It also showed the magnitude of the sacrifice that Jesus made on behalf of all of us. He took upon Himself the sins of the world, and His death on the cross was not just a physical death; it was a spiritual death as well.

However, the darkness was not just a sign of judgment. It was also a sign of hope. It was a sign of the resurrection, which demonstrated God’s power over death and sin. Even in our darkest moments, God is still in control, and He can turn our mourning into joy. That is pretty miraculous.

What can we take away from this? I think it is pretty simple. We need to have faith in the miraculous power of God. He is still working miracles today, just like He did during the crucifixion. We may not always understand what is happening in our lives or in the world around us, but we can trust that God is in control and that He is working all things together for our good and His glory.

Please remember the miraculous events that happened during the crucifixion, and have faith in the power of God to work miracles today. He is more than we will ever need and He is always with us!
