Devotion 4: The Child is the Everlasting Father

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6
It is incredible to look at this verse and see some of the characteristics of Jesus revealed in this prophecy. “Wonderful Counselor,” “Mighty God,” “Everlasting Father,” and “Prince of Peace” are titles with so much meaning attached to them. I love how the Bible shows us so much of who God is and how much of a mystery He can still be simply because He is God and above our understanding. The beauty of it is that God still reveals who He is to us.
The characteristic of Jesus being an “Everlasting Father” is an incredible thing to see and realize. To know that Jesus is everlasting, eternal, and forever is a powerful truth. Jesus is not just a man that was in history. Jesus not only lived and died. Jesus is forever. His Kingdom is forever. His power is forever. There is no end to Jesus. There is no end to His greatness. His fatherhood will have no end.
Colossians 1:16 says, “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – all things were created through him and for him.”
This verse in Colossians helps us see that all things were created by and through Jesus. Some will try to say that Jesus was just another creation of God. That is not true when you look through the Bible. Jesus is God. Jesus is Creator. Jesus is the “Everlasting Father.” All things are created through Him and for Him.
John 15:13 adds, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”
One of the ultimate roles of a father is to protect and provide for their children. The Child to be born was the “Everlasting Father.”He was to protect and provide for His people. We see that Jesus would ultimately go to the cross to save His people; to give a way for all people to be saved. It was to show the true act of protection and provision. He provided Himself out of love as the sacrifice to be slain. By what Jesus did alone on the cross, we now have the opportunity to be saved from the punishment of our sin. This is the love of God. This is the “Everlasting Father” who conquered sin and death for His children. How incredible it is to see this truth. We have a Father who would do anything for His children. There is nothing that can stop Jesus. His Kingdom and reign will be everlasting.
Let us worship our “Wonderful Counselor,” “Mighty God,” “Everlasting Father,” and “Prince of Peace” with everything that we are. He deserves all the glory and worship.
